What is a knot?
Myofascial Trigger Points, which are irritable spots in the fascia or the skeletal muscles. They are usually tender to touch, refer pain and can twitch when touched. They are not caused by acute local trauma or inflammation. They can affect performance of a whole muscle, spread pain to adjacent areas, and even cause other knots (Trigger Points). They are a major and often unsuspected factor in common pain problems like lower back pain and neck pain.
Do I apply cold or hot to a pain?
Apply cold to the area if it is a result of an injury. Apply cold for 20 minutes at least 3 times per day for 2-3 days following the injury.
After 2-3 days apply heat to the area to loosen the muscles, for 20 minutes at least 3 times per day for 2-3 days.
How do I know if a pain is from nerve, muscle or a skeletal problems?
Nerve is typically a burning or stinging sensation that may be in one spot or can spread to other parts of the body during activity.
Muscle (tear, sprain, pull) is typically a sharp, tearing or pulling sensation that occurs during transition from inactivity to activity or throughout a range of motion. Pain is present depending on the severity of the damage.
Skeletal (joint or bone) joint pain is typically a sharp, dull pressure or throbbing. The pain is usually caused by inflammation in and around the joint caused by muscle imbalances near the joint. Bone pain is usually sharp if it is a fracture or dull and achy if a bone bruise.
What is Sciatica?
A pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve — which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. Typically, sciatica affects only one side of your body. Sciatica most commonly occurs when a herniated disk or a bone spur on the spine compresses part of the nerve. This causes inflammation, pain and often some numbness in the affected leg.
